A considerable number of popular antibiotics have a chiral structure. As such, they exhibit optical activity and are prime candidates for detection with the PDR-Chiral Advanced Laser Polarimeter. We have included four examples in the Chiral Resource Center to demonstrate the usefullness of chiral detection. The first example demonstrates how the laser polarimeter is used to detect three analogs of Erythromycin. This chiral compound does not contain a chromophore and therefore cannot be easily measured by UV/Vis absorbance detection. The second example uses the laser polarimeter to "fingerprint" a sample of cow's milk containing four analogs of Gentamicin. In example number three a sample containing four Penicillin analogs is measured and from the polarimeter's response, and knowledge of the sample concentration, we are able to determine the specific rotation for penicillin, ampicillin, carbenicillin and ticarcillin. The fourth example we analyze five Tetracyclines in milk and construct calibration curves from the resulting data. |
